What is it ?
Bowen Therapy was brought to the United Kingdom from Australia in 1993. It is a light-touch, holistic therapy that promotes healing, pain relief, and general body balancing. It is a subtle muscle, nerve and connective tissue technique that enables the body to regulate itself, allowing many symptoms that were a result of trauma or injury to resolve.
Working initially on the parasympathetic nervous system emerging from the lumbar area, it slows the heart and breathing rates and induces relaxation. Relaxation is an antidote to stress – we are all aware of the effects that stress can have on the body ie., digestive disorders, gastric ulcers, and numerous other problems which can develop over time and damage the body’s ability to repair itself and thus function correctly.
The Technique may:
Promote healing by ensuring the correct flow of nutrients- Relieve pain by the elimination of toxins
- Stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic systems
- Prevent injury and promote future health by enabling a balance of the systems
“…….Bowen itself doesn’t treat anything, and indeed one of the principles is that we don’t treat specific conditions. The nice thing about Bowen is that there is no situation where it cannot be used safely and effectively. As well as structural or muscular problems, The Bowen Technique also has a profound effect on a range of organic conditions……”
Julian Baker, The Bowen Technique.
I personally came to Bowen having suffered chronic back pain and whiplash after a car accident over ten years ago. No other therapy I have experienced has had such a profound effect on my general well-being, and I am positive that the benefits have prevented further injuries. My background in ‘body work’, dogs and horses has enabled me to use this gentle therapy to help – could it help you or someone you know?
